Revolt of the SepoysSepoys- Indian troops used by British army
Sepoys regiments received new Enfield rifles that came with cartridges covered in paper waxed with animal fat British officers instructed sepoys to rip off paper with their teeth Sepoys refused to do this because they worried that the fat came from cows which were sacred to them As a result, Hindu sepoys killed their British officials and declared that they wanted Mughal authority to return Peasants and angry elites joined the revolt, turning it into a big rebellion Violent outcomes: sepoys overcame British garrison at Cawnpore; killed about 240 soldiers, and later killed about 375 women and children However, because the rebels had different interests, the British easily put down the rebellion within a year with the help of their advanced weaponry and communications Because of the rebellion, British government removed the East India Company that was previously in charge and imposed direct imperial rule |
