The Monroe Doctrine
- 1823: President James Monroe issues Monroe Doctrine, warns European nations against imperialistic designs in the Americas (In essence, proclaims the Americas a US protectorate)
- Benefited US entrepreneurs and their European counterparts by enforcing free trade in the region
- 1875: US purchases Alaska from Russia
- 1893-1898: Hawaiian Kingdom overthrown by plantation owners and annexed by the US
- 1898-1899: Spanish-American War, ended last remnants of Spain's American Empire (Cuba & Puerto Rico)
- US then took possession of Guam & The Phillipines (Spain's last colonies in The Pacific) despite a Filipino revolt
- 1903: US supports Columbia rebellion in exchange for rights to build Panama Canal & control the surrounding area
Japanese Imperialistic Expansion
- Japanese deeply resented the unequal treaties imposed on them by the US and European powers
- Rapid industrialization during the Meiji period allowed them to join the ranks of imperial powers
- 1870s: Japanese leaders consolidated hold on Hokkaido and Kurile Islands, encouraged japanese citizens to settle there
- 1879: Japan established hegemony over Okinawa & Ryuku Islands (S)
- 1876: Japan purchases modern warships from Britain, uses Navy to impose Imperialistic Rules on Korea
- 1894: Japan declares war on China to protect Japanese business interests in Korea
- 1895: Japan wins war & Korean independence is established ( essentially dependency of Japan)
- ^ Taiwan, Pescadores Islands, and Liaodong Peninsula also ceded
- 1904: Russo-Japanese War breaks out, Japan wins colonial authority over Korea, Liaodong peninsula, half of Sakhalin Island, and economic interests in S Manchuria
